I plan to use New Cumnock's association with mining to create and sell souvenirs made from the resources of the local area, such as coal and slate. I would like to have an outlet on the main street which would also contain visitor information on where to find other Ayrshire craft centres and visitor attractions which would be beneficial as many of these may wish to sell/display the products that have been created.
After studying for a tourism degree, I see a niche market for local goods including souvenirs made from local materials. I plan to find as many local good quality craftspersons as I can and promote their wears in a shop in New Cumnock. At the same time I will promote quality goods made from local materials in a workshop in the town. Fire-clay, coal-dust and cannel coal will be included in my first venture as these seem to be abundent resources from the three opencast mines in the area.
Using iconic figures such as Burns and Wallace as well as mining figures, there should be a market for this type of product. Plates, mugs, photo frames etc will also be marketable with more ideas on the way.
